Fantastic - almost like a cinema at home! - 23 Mar 2008

I spent several months deciding which TV to get and in the end I plumped for this one, and I am not disappointed. At first I thought it was too big (I had an old-style 32 inch before) but it was only an extra 4 inches wider (in actual measurement) and it didn't take too long to get used to it. Because it is 'pictureframe' it's ALL screen and the quality it brilliant. We have a PS3 and have watched several Blu-ray DVDs with surround sound on and its almost like being at the cinema! Superb!! I would recommend this TV to anyone. Oh and by the way Amazon delivered very quickly and well packaged.

beautiful / baffling / returning! - 15 Mar 2008

In the stampede to replace that old clunky TV box with a shiny new flatscreen, you're faced with not only a myriad of choices but a minefield of decisions over screen size for room size , HD type, plasma v LCD, connections and not least the other kit you'll feel bound to upgrade to match it all.

The Toshiba is a fantastic set both in picture quality and design. If you're looking for a new flatscreen TV at a great price and you're not one to trawl the press and internet reviews that'll inevitably keep changing and confusing your mind anyway, then go buy this now.

Delivery from Amazon is excellent and all you have to do is connect the pedestal stand which is easy and quick. And don't be put off by backlight bleed mentioned in some reviews, you won't see it.

As for screen size it does maximise its space with the picture frame surround, so if you're worried that a 40" is too big for your room it fills a standard 37" set size and is perfect for a viewing distance of 2.5 - 3.5m.

HDMI cables are a good investment - there's nothing in the box to connect it properly to your Sky or Virgin box - and the QED Qunex HDMI cable is much better than the high street stores cheap ranges. Hi def broadcasts are crystal and what this TV was made for but standard TV still looks great even if football or fast moving sports are slightly disappointing showing some blur.

Connected to a standard DVD player with a scart cable will still produce a great picture (and much better than standard TV broadcasts) but a HD DVD player (with that extra HDMI cable) will up the ante much further. The TV's integrated speakers are very good for day to day viewing but connected to a hifi or surround system will add to your viewing experience. It's easy to see how once you've invested in this TV you can be hooked into much more extra add ons but even if you don't or can't it still works just fine.

The baffling gripe is setting it up.

All manufacturers distribute TVs for showroom / shop settings so colour, contrast, brightness and the multitude of picture options are a million miles away from how this TV should look in your home. This Toshiba will arrive not ready for you to fully enjoy. And there appears to be no answer to the ideal settings unless you know what you're doing or buy a set up DVD. Sure it depends on your viewing environment and what you connect it to and you could search the various online forums to see the + 52 Colour, - 7 tint and options inbetween.

Toshiba really need to pay some attention to a basic consumer need and include some basic settings. Would we buy any other product that required hours of effort and research to get it to its optimum?

For a great TV you just could be left wondering how should it look as good as it could look.

With a little effort, once you get there, it's worth it!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Well after such a glowing review and two weeks in, the screen has developed dead and stuck pixels - basically small black or coloured squares which will ruin your viewing. Apparently this is a fact of life with flatscreens and most manufacturers Toshiba included will not replace unless there are a set number in set screen places. We'll see what Amazon will say. As an owner of Sony and LG screens I've never had this problem before and a check on forums will show this is a big and frustrating problem. So beware.

Class - 21 Feb 2008

I checked out the stores first and after watching a high definItion DVD of The mATRIX on this Toshiba I WAS blown away. The store was charging £1,149.99 + £200.00 for 1+2 years cover. Hahaha, very funny between amazon and myself I saved £300!!! and have 5 years cover.
Well I was a little apprehensive about ordering serious kit online. Tic toc, tic toc I received emails and phone calls within 2 days of ordering (very reassuring) and now I have the set on a stand in my living room. Delivery was excellent with a courtesy phone call 45mins ahead of time.

Now the T.V is exceptional. You can fully customize the settings even down to the cool blue glow on the front.
One of my first concerns was light bleed in letterbox mode mentioned in two present reviews. I killed the lights, put it in a Standard Definition DVD The Chronicles of Riddick and guess what..........................................
no bleed. Black as black the letterbox was/is. As for the q.u.a.l.i.t.y wooo weeee! I can barely wait for the blu-ray playing PS3, which should be winging its way to me now.

Watching normal T.V say virgin cable one can see that the SD varies from program to programe. Old early
sit coms seem dull and washed out, old documentries look faded, but in general some current stuff I would
grade from 5/10 to 9/10. But hey slap in one of your favourite films and leave the main stream behind!

Ok before I go some tried and tested settings from another forum:

Active Backlight on
Cinema mode on
3d colour mgt on
Backlight 29
Contrast 88
Brightness 60
Color 46
Tint 0
Sharpness 0
Black stretch off
Stable sound on
Dnr auto
Colour temp warm

Exact scan when using 1080p source

Ok I must go. To do what? Guess what. Look at the T.V i've only had it 24hrs.

UPDATE. My PS3 arrived with that "spare" £300.00 I saved. I purchased the blu-ray version of Deja Vu without a case on ebay for £7.00 and a 10gb carrying HDMI cable (don't get 5gb) and Oh my Gosh. No turning back. Bye bye DVD's

Excellent TV (like it to be 4.5 stars!) - 21 Feb 2008

I would have liked to give it 4.5 stars, but can't do half stars!
The only thing that stops this being 5 stars is it is missing Picture in Picture and a few other little features.

So what is good: the price (at under £1000 - it iniitally sold at £1700!); the picture (rates with any of the panasonic or sonys); the Freeview tuner (it is a good one, with its own singal booster); the sub-woofer out (works really well with the built in speakers, if you don't want the wiring hassle of a full 5.1 set up).

So what is really good: the thinness of the frame, "yes" it really does make a diference in giving more viewing screen without dominating the room and makes it jsut an overall better looking set.

Not sure if it is the later verison I have (v5.5), but I see no 24fps juddering or light bleed, which come up as comments from early sets.

Now if it only had PIP, it would be perfect..... (suspect that will come in the next, but more expensive, version).

Great TV - 04 Feb 2008

The 40XF355 is a stunning looking LCD..it doesnt actually look much bigger than my old 37inch..so if your hoping for a big looking upgrade then you'd be better off going perhaps for the 46" version. That said the High def picture running through this tv is nothing short of stunning. I have both an hd-dvd player and ps3,so can play blu-ray and hd dvd and both running at either 1080i or 1080p looks amazing. One thing i will say is that if you are playing an hd signal please use the "exact scan" mode as this maps the image out 1.1 as it is coded resulting in no downscaling and loss of image. When you use the regular setting you can see the tv has cropped a small portion of the image. All you 720p users out there take heed as this happens on the 720 signal on any HD TV..these are the benefits of 1080p full hd tv's.

One slight niggle is standard dvd's didnt look as good as on my old lcd, even upscaled to 1080i/p..it depends on what movie you are watching but maybe coz its a 1080 res it puts more fake pixels in..still its not that bad and still gives a pretty good standard dvd image. Also freeview/anolougue signal are decent but i have seen better on other lcd's..a small niggle

The sound is also pretty reasonable once you have tweaked the myriad of settings and are certainly good enough for tv but dont expect it to rival yiur local multiplex or a 5.1 sound system.

Toshiba have rolled out a stunning LCD here,an attractive designd, stunning HD quality pic and decent sound make this a LCD winner!!

Update!! I can confirm what another eviwer said here about this unit. Light can be seen bleeding in from the two top corners and can be a little distracting at times. The other reviewer said that toshiba said it wasnt a fault but might call them myself to clarify the situation. Please beware of this if this will put you off this set.
