Don't bother - 02 Aug 2007

I bought this TV from Currys in March 2007 and I've never been 100% pleased with it. The best thing about it is its cosmetic appearance, but that is not really what it is designed for. When you actually switch it on is when the problems start.

*Picture: generally OK but I feel it is a bit soft/blurry. Also, scrolling text (like tickers on news channels, and end of programme credits) judders quite severely as it moves across the screen.

*Sound: really poor. No bass whatsoever. To watch normal TV (from Sky+ box) I usually have to have it up to 60% volume. To get audible sound from a DVD, I have to whack it up to nearly 100%. That's not acceptable.

*Headphone jack: I don't know whether this is just a problem with my set but when I plug in headphones I only get sound from the left channel.

*Power problems: I'd had the TV for just under two months when one morning it refused to switch on. The red light just kept blinking and nothing happened. I had to return it to Currys who, in turn, returned it to Samsung for repair. It came back after 4 weeks with the problem fixed but it is now lopsided. I'm not pleased.

*Standby: if you're environmentally friendly, don't get this TV. You can't actually switch it off. Even when you press the button on the TV itself, it only goes into standby mode. The only way to cut power is to unplug it from the wall.

So, those are my thoughts. I may have just had a dodgy set, I don't know. I've just ordered a Sony Bravia to replace the Samsung, which sounds a lot better.

Terrible Quality - 06 Jul 2007

We bought this TV a couple of months back, and it looks gorgeous!
However - we've had nothing but trouble with it!
Out of nowhere, the TV started adjusting the volume all on its own, so you'd be listening to it, and it would sound fine, then suddenly it would become really loud. We got in touch with Samsung, and arranged to send it back to them for repair, and it cames back promptly which was great. However, the probelm had not been fixed. Its now gone back to Samsung a second time for another attempt at repair.
The worrying thing is, that with only a 1 year guaranmtee, we soon won't be covered for further repairs. And whats more - Samsung insist they are allowed 3 attempts at repairing it before they will exchange it for us which seems outrageous! Its not our fault we've been sold a faulty product, yet we are the ones having to go through the inconvenience of returning it 3 times!
I'm hoping we'll eventually get our money back so we can go and buy a trusted Sony!!

Poor sound - thanks to B Mullen - 01 Jul 2007

Nearly bought one as it looks great and would have matched the kitchen decor. But thanks to B Mullen's review I popped into the local John Lewis and tried out the sound. Dire! At 90 - 100% you could just hear it. And fans of this set will be crying 'foul' as a John Lewis store on a Sunday afternoon is a busy noisy place. Well, so is my kitchen!

But the killer blow for the Samsung was when I tried the Humax next to it and it could be heard perfectly at 35% volume and the sound had bass too. Something completely absent from the Samsung! And as I wanted the TV for freeview and digital radio the Samsung was out. Bought a Sony Bravia with digital tuner built in (Sony do the best freeview tuners) and it is fantastic. Smaller than the Samsung but the same price and no need to buy a separate digital box. Game over Samsung!

A thing of beauty and a joy... - 24 Jun 2007

This is a really nice television. The picture is clear and bright. For someone entirely new to LCD TVs faces look just a wee bit different from the way they look on normal TV (they seem just a bit more plasticky, I feel), but everything else is so sparklingly clear and detailed that I'm happy to get used to this.

The sound is absolutely fine in my modest-sized sitting room (we are about 10 feet from the TV), but then we don't want deafening cinema sound and don't watch lots of war films or play video games. The volume is perfectly adequate for any viewers over about 30 years old in average-sized houses not situated at the end of a runway, and it is, moreover, flexible (you can select different sound "packages" - for want of a better word - for films, ordinary watching and so on, with a specially good feature being that you can favour speech over music - and doing this is a really simple process taking a few seconds each time you want to change).

My pen-name is extremely apt and not at all false modesty - but even I found this incredibly easy to set up - just plug in the power, the scart lead (if attaching a dvd/freeview or whatever) and the other input thingy and let the TV set itself up, which it does very quickly, and you are away. I got it out of the box and was watching it in less than 10 minutes from signing the delivery chit. Brilliant! I love this product.
