If you want a value for money region free, this is the one! - 23 Jan 2008

I bought this mainly because the hack in the first review would enable the region free function on this player, I didn't want to pay too much for a ready made multi-region player because in my experience they often don't play all region 1 discs.
The hack worked like a charm as has already been said, and the delivery was fast despite using super saver.
The picture is great and the functions are easy to use, I am by no means an electronics wizz kid so needed something I could just plug in and turn on 'and away you go' sort of thing!
This player really did it for me, it is definatley value for money.
Not bad for the money - 23 Nov 2007

I've just purchased this as I previously had a DVD, VHS video player, satelite and a freeview box all plumbed into the TV but due to a lack of scarts could not record from satelite (without using a scart switcher). The DVD died and I replaced the dvd and vhs with this. TBH for my needs this is absolutely fine. I self record and download most of my films and it plays them all inc DIVx files, but it did have a wobble where it wouldn't play a standard MPEG2 file but it played in another machine, but when when I put it back in the Samsung it played!
It has 2 scarts, so now I can record my satelite and when using as a DVD player has a display on the front which I find handy as increasingly manufacturers are moving towards on screen displays.
It's 5.1 sound, multi region using the hack posted, multi format, music player and was easy to set up. I'd have another.
retrogarde step - 30 Oct 2007

i was dissapointed by the backward technology I found with this player. To search for a recorded section on VHS, I had to use 4 - 5 steps to activate this feature via the remote. The VHS playback is poor quality on LP and just about acceptable on SP. Also when trying to input info for timer recording, the TV function is disabled. This also happens when the 'search' facility is used on the VCR.
I returned the unit and purchased the Toshiba 38VB. This unit is much better than the Samsung. For e.g. the VCR search facility uses only 1 step on the remote. Also got 2 speeds on fast forward/reverse during playback. The samsung only had 1 speed. Overall the Toshiba is much more user friendly and pragmatic.

Very prompt delivery from Amazon, even using super-saver option. Very easy to setup and use with my rather 'senior' tv and freeview box. Good picture and sound quality on the DVD player and the hack given by Mr. Shoesmith works like a charm, so for the money this is an awesome bargain. Highly recommended!
