We're now onto our second player and this one has just failed - the DVD recording goes into write mode at the end of a recording and does not complete the process. The machine cannot be turned off and you have to unplug it. Once it is turned on again it will not recognise any disks.
The recorder is slow to boot up and initialise which is a pain. I wouldn't buy another one and if this is the best Philips can do then I wouldn't buy a Philips anything again.

Been using one of these for 3 months now, mainly to transfer a mountain of old home video VHS tapes to DVD. It does this quite well through easy to use menus and the resultant quality is good, however, the software/firmware seems very 'buggy'.
Problems include:-
1. Going into record mode when pressing 'stop' on the remote control
2. Losing hi-fi stereo output from tape playback (a power-off restores this)
3. Failing to record timed programs off-air (with or without PDC enabled)
4. Locking up completely (a power-off restores this)
I've loaded the latest system software (November 2004) but without much improvement. Not sure if the problems are down to software or if there is a hardware fault, waiting for the next release from Philips before deciding on my next move.
