Don't see why some people have a problem. - 28 Mar 2008

Having owned this machine now for 2 weeks I can not understand why some people have problems setting this up. From opening the box to recording programs took me 20 minutes, thats cabling it all up from my Sky HD box and through my surround sound using scarts, hdmi cables and coaxes.
The machine is really easy to use with the on screen guides explaining what each function does. I can not comment on the EPG as I don't use it, I only bought this machine so I can copy programs from my planner on the Sky HD box to the dvd recorders hard drive and then on to dvd if needed. Picture quality on burnt dvd's is good - depending on the quality used to burn it and sound seems ok, have not noticed any problems. Bought dvd's do look better thanks to the upscaling capability.
Cracking piece of kit, can not argue about the price and the on screen functions are really good, it even alters the quality settings for you if the program you have recorded does not fit on the disc you are trying to burn to - it even gives you a option to ignore this and pick your own setting.
Well worth 5 stars - really happy with the product.
Absolutely Brilliant! - 24 Mar 2008

Purchased about a month ago and extremely pleased. Brilliant picture quality, good instructions & the machine is very intuitive to use anyway. Copied many of my old video recordings onto DVDs - superb picture. Able to watch a DVD while recording live TV to the hard disk too. Yes, you can only watch the (digital or otherwise) "live" channel which you're recording & not watch another "live" channel at the same time with this machine - in the same way that you can only watch the channel that you're recording when using a VCR... if you want to watch 1 digital channel while recording another, then buy a cheap set top box!
Very impressed - 17 Mar 2008

I have had my RDR-HXD870 for a few weeks now, I only use it for DVDs and recording television so I can't comment on any of the other features.
The general functions are quite easy to use, although it is packed full of clever settings and whatnot that I haven't found the time to try and understand. TV recording is simple and easy to follow, and DVDs play with very good quality when using the HDMI upscaler.
My one criticism of the television is the quality of the digital television. I have my lead connecting in to the digital tuner for the HDD recorder, and then out to my TV which has its own digital tuner. The quality of the TV from the recorder is of a noticeably lower quality than the digital TV from my TV alone. I am not sure why, so can't pin the blame 100% on the recorder's tuner. However it is still very good, so it's not too much of a criticism.
Ridiculous and Stupid Sony - 11 Mar 2008

The handbook for this recorder is written in just about the worst English you can imagine. It is not an easy Machine to set up and there is no help telephone line when things go wrong. I woud not advise purchase. Pick something that is simple to set-up and has an idiot's guide written in simple English. Sony should know and do better. A disgrace for a multi-million pound company.
A massive disappointment - 10 Mar 2008

I cancelled my Sky+ subscription because this machine promised to do pretty much everything the Sky+ does - HD recording, live pause, series link - without the hassle of a monthly subscription (we only really watch the Freeview channels).
Well, an hour after this came out of the box, it was packaged up and ready to send back to Amazon. Sky have just very smugly agreed to come and reinstall my Sky box. For free, mind you.
What Sony don't tell you is that if you're using this box as your digital tuner, you CAN'T WATCH DIGITAL TV WHILE RECORDING DIGITAL TV! The only way is, presumably, if your TV also has an integrated digital tuner, or if you use an external set-top box.
Rather defeats the object, no? These appliances are supposed to be self-contained. They're not.
Also, Sony could really do with checking out their competition. The Sky+ remote has a keypad, a pause/play button, coloured buttons and menu navigation. All told, about 35 buttons. The Sony has 59, including three different buttons for recording (including the TV pause feature). User friendly? I don't think so.
Avoid, especially if you're a Sky+ user looking for an alternative. You'll be BEGGING Mr Murdoch's merry men to come and reinstall your Sky box.
