5 Reviews for Sony RDRHXD860S 160GB HDD HDMI DVD Recorder
Poor product from Sony, Plasma users beware - 08 Sep 2007

Owned this for 5 months. Pros: excellent build quality, good picture quality but all this is significantly outweighed by the cons: noisy hard drive/fan (you can often hear this when watching); unit does not power down once you switch it off until after 20 mins and powers up 11 minutes before starting to record on a timer and the noise is disturbing; goes into indefinite Pause mode when it reaches the end of a programme (Plasma users ensure you do not fall asleep when watching a programme!); menus are clumsy; remote is not the most responsive; and to top it all the unit has suddenly started switching itself off in the middle of watching programs (did it once during dubbing). I would never buy this again.
Great HDD/DVD recorder and even better service from Amazon - let down by the machine is not reliable - 10 Aug 2007

Planned this 6 months in advance by reading all the reviews in the glossy mags. Then bought it a few months ago and it would have been rated at 5 then - great machine for about three months I used it all the time to the point I even filled up the hard disk twice and then copied it all over to DVD disks but then it went into meltdown. I had the same experience as another reviewer with the unit powering off and on again and again plus making funny noises like metal to metal rubing, finally it refused to record onto disc. I only retrieved the data on HDD by copying it onto video tape, a bit of a step backwoods (thank god I kept the old video player).
Amazon were great about it and their phone-back service worked within seconds, well done Amazon. Becouse of Amazon excellent service I will buy my next HDD/DVD recorder (thinking of Sony RDRHXD970) from Amazon. As reading other reviews it looks likely the recorder will go wrong AGAIN, so better be safe than sorry... Buy from Amazon not a unknown company.
Bloody Loud!!!! - 25 Jul 2007

I live in France and so I can only comment on using this as a straight "video recorder" I use this with a Sky box through scart and now that I have bought good quality scart cables the recorded picture is as good as the original broadcast which is obviously a vast improvement over what went before. But this comes at a price; I had reasonable quality cables which I had successfully used before but with these the Sony's picture quality was awful. Thus it was necessary to buy what I consider to be expensive leads (£40 each) to achieve images without ghosting etc. So it's very good then? Well no, this is the loudest bit of electronic kit I've ever heard and I find it truly annoying. In quiet passages of films it is always there ... whining away. Awful. And this from What Hi-fi magazines product of the year! The software is clunky too. Very button intensive. So to summarise - it's a mixed bag. High quality images can be stored, live TV paused, recorded to DVD etc but it's very flawed by being noisy and with a poorly designed OS. I have ownwd this for 7 months and I've not experienced the reliability problems that others have mentioned here but I do note over that time that it is £100 more than I paid in December! Could have been great but it feels hurried to me so simply .. good.
Recorder switching on/off - problem solved by Sony - 23 Jul 2007

If anyone is having problems with their recorder switching on and off randomly there is now a fix! In the last few weeks my own HXD860 was randomly switching on and off whilst watching tv through the recorder or recording a program.
After contacting Sony technical support its appears that Channel Five has recently changed its frequency setting which is interfering with the recorders causing them to switch on and off whilst watching/recording any of the Channel Five channels including Five US.
New software has been produced by Sony and over air downloads are planned for 23rd to 25th July on Channel 071(CBeebies) and on the 28th to 30th July on Channel 001 (BBC1)
Customers are advised to leave their machines turned on to one of these channels between the above dates for a period of at least one hour to ensure the download completes.
I completed my download yesterday (23rd) and all appears back to normal. For more information visit their website at Sony.co.uk or contact them on 08705 111 999.
Dispite this hick-up, its still a great recorder. Goodluck!!!
Excellent service from Amazon - terrible piece of kit from Sony - 23 Jul 2007

Bought my first one a few months ago - great for about three weeks then it went into meltdown. I had the same experience as another reviewer with the unit powering off and on again, finally it refused to do anything at all, and I only retrieved the disc that was in there after consulting the manual.
So it went back and a replacement came quickly from Amazon. This one worked perfectly for a couple of months but now this is starting to show worrying quirks. Just as a previous reviewer says, it powers off at completely random moments, sometimes when recording to HDD, sometimes when watching recordings from the HDD. It doesn't power off when watching DVDs or when watching TV through the Freeview, so I guess it's something to do with the recording function, though I would have imagined that Sony would have either done something about this via an update, or at the very least, notified its agents and resellers that there was a known problem so they could contact their customers. I don't really mind things going wrong - it's annoying, but not as maddening and frustrating as huge companies who won't admit to their mistakes or do anything about them.
This one is going back to Amazon just as soon as I've copied to disc the hours of programmes I've recorded. Let's see how the third unit does...
