Buy with extreme caution - 22 Mar 2008

I bought this machine as part of a Home Cinema system. Within a couple of days I noticed a problem in that the overall playing time of discs was shown incorrectly in the display panel, and indeed often varied for the same disc. I took it back to my retailer who exchanged it. The replacement did exactly the same. This problem, and another irritating problem (the machine had a tendency to clip the beginning of the first track when playing CDs) was reported to Sony via my retailer but I heard nothing back. Just over a year after purchase the machine started to reject various DVDs and CDs with the message 'cannot play this disc', despite the fact that these discs played perfectly well on other machines. Now, two years after purchase, the machine refuses to play just about all the discs in my collection!

Built in fault - 20 Mar 2008

I purchased this a Sony DVD Recorder RDRGX-210 in June 2005. In January 2006 a fault occurred i.e. it would not accept disks and ejected them. A new laser was replaced under the warantee. In December the same year the same fault occurred this time they replaced the DVD Mech, but at a cost of £135. Now in February 2008 the same fault has occurred and the engineer's report is that it needs a new Mech at a cost of £137. This is obviously an inbuilt fault. The life of the Mech appears to be about ten months. Sony do not want to know. I now have to purchase a new DVD Recorder. It certainly won't be a Sony

Disappointing - don't buy - 13 Jan 2008

Excellent features but extremely poor function. This DVD recorder will stop playing/recording your DVDs after several months. I got mine repaired under warranty for the same thing to happen 12months later. Appauling build quality from Sony which was one of the main reasons for looking at this recorder. Keep well clear and report any faults early if you have already purchased the item. I'd go as far as saying you should reject it under the sale of goods act.

Cannot Play This Disc - 01 Jan 2008

This DVD Recoeder worked OK for a few months (only light use). Then messages began 'Cannot Play This Disc'. Spent many hours trying to figure it all out. Still same. Tried different TVs, still same. Then began to look on-line for reviews and BINGO! Customers having Similar problems. I wonder if there is a destruction time built into the chip? Just after warranty ended. Too costly repairing. Its at the tip. Never again Sony

Works for first few months if you are lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 11 Sep 2007

This is the first review I have ever done - I just couldn't help myself.
Sadly I purchased one of these and for the first few months it worked fine then it wouldn't recognise most rewritable discs. If it did record anything it would not then play back. Then eventually it would not even play new or old bought dvd's sadly to my kids dissapointment. It is painfully slow to do anything. Sony's customer service is poor, my recorder was just over the one year warranty when it would not play anything. Maybe I should have contacted sony earlier when I had problems but I initially kept wondering am I an idiot what am I doing wrong and tried various RW disc formatts and busy lives don't leave much time for this type of thing. Sony's only advice was to get it inspected/repaired by their recommended engineer. Inspection cost £30 non-refundable. The diagnosis - needs new DVD Drive £145.

I would not have one of these for FREE it's not worth the dissapointment.
