Timed Record? Have you guys not heard of SKY Plus - 21 Feb 2008

Bought this DVD recorder so I could transfer Sky Plus Programmes to DVD and some of my Old VHS stuff that I want on DVD. Never had a problem with it. Agree with the slow boot time but once up it works like a dream. The main complaint here seems to be timed record. Why would you trust this to a DVD recorder? Get a HD recorder or Sky Plus if you want to do this! If you are after a simple, cheap, reliable way to transfer info from a HD recorder, VHS or camcorder to DVD this is a great purchase - especially at this price! I bought mine a year ago and it cost me £110! Ignore the whingers here they are expecting too much from something that ultimately was not designed for the purpose they want.
Very poor product from Philips - 03 Dec 2007

The main reason I chose this model was that it was built by Philips and I assumed that it would be good. Quality is fine, after that, it refuses to recognise discs it has already burned programmes onto, it often fails to record for no obvious reason, it is incredibly slow to power on or load or unload discs. At least one minute will pass while it flickers and whirrs. It often fails to recognise replicated DVDs (ie retail discs). It's cumbersome and complicated to programme and the remote os fiddly and small. don't buy one!
Why can't I give it zero stars?

Had one of these for a couple of years now. Generally ok, but has a couple of faults. Can't get it record the screen format, if it's not 4:3. Sets tv format from pre-recorded DVDs, but it's own are always 4:3.
DON'T use the automatic time/date, it's unreliable. It's supposed to use one of the broadcast channels for this. We have a very good signal, but occasionally the time would be wrong by several hours. Have had it set to Manual but recently it decided to revert to Auto all by itself; then it set the date several months out.
Also, the clock doesn't run if the power is off, so it has to be on standby, which fortunately doesn't take much power.
Pathetic machine- even more pathetic customer helpline - 31 Aug 2007

I've had nothing but trouble with this machine since I bought it (not from Amazon). There is at least a 40 second delay after pushing any command buttons. Nightmare when you want to record anything improptu..by the time you've got an empty DVD in and waited for machine to acknowledge it and then press the record button, programme is almost over!!
Now after my warranty has run out, its decided to retain one of my DVD, the deck won't open at all. Tried the customer helpline, after the long laborious menu,it eventually tells me the tel no. has changed, tried the new number and the message tells me to ring the original number... talk about going round in a circle! must have wasted three quid
Think I'll just buy a new DVD-recorder...certainly won't be another Philips.
I should have read customers' reviews on this product before
buying.
Disappointed - 22 Jun 2007

Bought mine in Nov'05...have been rather disappointed with it since. Wish I'd looked at reviews first, this item has put me off Philips products totally. My father-in-law has a dvd/video combi, the dvd refuses to play sometimes unless you give it a tap or turn it upside-down and try again.
Very awkward to use, my wife is still unable to use it to record a program as its not straight forward at all. (no disrespect to the ladies but they are not normally technical minded about these things)
Have set dvd's to 4 hour recording, recordings are sometimes pixellated.
There is no 3 hour record mode.
Menus are awkward to navigate through.
When Pdc is ON, it will not record the program I have set to record.
When recording using Videoplus you still have to set the record mode, ie AV1, AV2,F-AV etc.
The clock doesn't set automatically when you switch on the mains plug, you have to manually set the clock if you want to set up a timed recording.
It takes a long time to initialise when you switch it on.
I did have trouble with it freezing up.
The remote has to be pointing directly at the machine for it to work.
Good points are it records onto dvd+ or - r/rw.
Wouldnt buy another Philips product again.
