I have had mine for >2 years and paid £220 for it. I record everything at SLP and the quality is superb, even DVD's with 3 films on. I have not done any firmware upgrades.
All the colour/picture problems in these reviews reminded me I did have that problem but when I fitted a better quality scart lead (Gold £5 from CPC) they disappeared and it has been perfect since.
My main problem is the loss of the whole contents of the drive, it has happened twice now. The first time totally blanked everything with no icons or contents, the second time I had all the icons but with 0 size, consequently no data. Maybe I should have tried switching off the power mid play and getting it to rescan the drive? The other option is to put a different HDD in to see if that solves it.
The remote is very touchy and can take a slow press as 2 presses but I took this as my fault for being a bit too slow..
The timer menu can make it's own mind up when it will record or not but as the first time mine deleted the whole HDD contents was after I deleted some of the timer selections I am loathe to touch them again. Setting up a multi record time is easy but it keeps getting them wrong so find it easier to set them as seperate times for different days.
Recorded DVD's play well on my sons & daughters players and I have played DVD's from my daughters recorder on the LiteOn with just the odd problem, not able to FF or FRW as it plays from where it was previously when the play button is pressed.
I think the unit is good value for money and would like to see a dual channel freeview tuner included but for now it's serving me well.

I have owned one of these machines for around 2 years now and sometimes I think it is great machine but sometimes it drives me mad.

Like another reviewer, my machine has recorded black nothing on occasions which can be very annoying but the most frustrating thing about this machine is the recording to dvd disk.

I did a lot of experiments in the first place and settled on Data Write disks which seemed to be the most reliable. After recording some programmes onto these disk AND checking the disk to make sure everything was fine before deleting the files from the hard drive, going back to some of these disk month's later I now find that quite a few of them now do not read at all.

Another beware fact is the defragmenting of the hard drive. Despite the manual clearly stating that defragmenting should be done regulary and that no problems will occur on the one occasion I did defragment I lost a lot of programmes from the drive. The technical guys at Lite-On then inform me that the software could not cope with the 160gig drive properly and I should not have done the defragmenting without first making a back up. I would of needed about 25 disks to have done that at the time.

It is probable now that one of the firmware upgrades MAY have solved this problem but I do not know for certain as I have not defragmented the drive since.

If you buy this machine then make sure that you do not delete your files from the drive until you are sure the disk reads into another machine.

I bought my lite-on from dixons and it would not work from the very start,it came with a nasty cheap scart lead which I changed for a gold plated one costing £19.00'
It worked perfectly with that.

I have owned a Lit-eon 5045 for just over two years now I paid £[...] I tell you the 5045 is a brilliant machine in comparison to others. I foolishly decided recently to put my 5045 to rest and purchase what I thought a new state of the art 320gb Yamada DVR-9300HX.
The Yamada cannot hold a candle to the qualities of the Liteon 5045.
I can write a very large dossier informing you of the comparison with the two machines.
For those of you that have had problems with the 5045 I can only suggest to be patient and study the instructions thoroughly. By defraging and putting in the software from the Liteon web site will solve your troubles and make the machine more efficient and trouble free.
I feel I should write an apology to Liteon for even considering moving to another machine after my extremely disappointing experience with a poorly put together Yamada 9300HX.
YOU CAN NOW PURCHASE A NEW LITOEN 5045 FOR £[...] at UKDVDR A REAL BARGAIN, SNAP IT UP WHILE YOU CAN.

If only it was built by Sony!! - 24 Apr 2007

The features & spec of this machine are top class. The manual is easy to understand & the remote is logically laid out. Basically, if you put ANY disc 4 inches across & silver into it, it'll play it! It will copy DVDs & CDs in minutes, far more easily than using a PC, you can use it as an MP3 player, load CDs into it & hook it up to your Hi-Fi. It was a brilliant machine!!
It was a crying shame that it was built by blind, untrained mountain goats in Uzbekestan! (Or wherever it came from)
Sometimes it doesn't power up. Sometimes it produces sound & no picture. Sometimes it won't play a DVD that it played yesterday. Sometimes it crashes completely & you have to pull the plug out at the mains. You get the picture! ( Or maybe not!)
A brilliantly designed unit that 2 months outside the 12 month guarantee was thrown in the bin last week!
Keep your old VCR as a standby!!
