5 Reviews for Yakumo XL2 5.1 Channel Multi-region DVD Player [With Scart Lead]

At least it was cheap - 20 Aug 2006

I bought two of these DVDs as, at the time, Amazon was selling them for under £30.

However, a year in and one of them has packed up entirely - the other one is still going, but not without the kind of problems many other reviewers have already mentioned here: the picture sticking and freezing, the whirring, clicking noises, the badly designed remote control, the refusal to load DVD-Video format DVDs at times (in addition to a dislike of certain other DVD formats), the sudden refusal to play the disc that's inside it etc. etc.

I'm somewhat consoled by the fact that I'm not the only person to have experienced this, but Yakumo should be drowning in embarrassment at having a product of theirs condemned so roundly on Amazon.

On the plus side, it worked like a dream at first, giving very little problems or hassles. However, like your average teenager, the more work it has had to do, the more it has protested and stuck two fingers up at me.

This wasn't an expensive mistake to make, so that's some relief. At least I got a good year out of it. In addition, it does play multi-region DVDs with no problems at all; that's its strongest point. It's just a shame that Yakumo didn't invest in building it to last. In the long run, it will cost them far more than it's cost me.

Ive had mine for well over a year and it has been faultless, Ive had no problems at all, it has played all discs on all regions including whole series of 24. The picture quality is so clear, I recently got a Philips DVP3005/05 which is highly rated on this site-the picture quality was not as good as the Yakumo when I tested it with Scarface region 1 in both machines and after trying different settings on the Philips it made no difference, the Yakumo had more vibrant colours and clearer picture. The Philips has progressive scan but you need a prog scan capable Tv to access that. The Yakumo also has a good remote with useful features such as being able to check how long is left on a disc, disc resume when you have switched off the night before it starts again where you left off, volume control, switch from Pal to NTSC to multi at the touch of a button. 5 stars for quality, ease of use, price and reliability.

Excellent! - 02 May 2006

I bought this DVD player quite a while ago now but after noticing some of the reviews it has been getting I thought I should add my opinion.
I was looking for cheap DVD player that would play everything I wanted, not look big and old fashioned but not burn a hole in my pocket also!
I admit at first, as this DVD player is not a 'known' brand and reading some reviews I was a bit wary but decided to go for it anyway.
I am gald I did! It is the best DVD player ever. I have read that some people are having trouble with their players in that they keep stopping working etc. I have never had any trouble whatsoever!
It has played every disc I have put in it, has never stopped working once and the picture and sound quality is great! It looks good too.
I liked this so much I bought this same DVD player again for my living room and recommended it to people who have also gone on to buy it.
If in doubt just go for it. I did and I've never regretted it once!

PERFECT pictures - 03 Apr 2006

I was sceptical whether this would perform well as it was so cheap, but am amazed that I have tried all regions dvds in it and they all play very well with perfect sound and pictures, so i would recommend buying it, it is also very easy to set up too.

not worth it - 28 Mar 2006

I bought this DVD player about 3 months ago, thinking if it only lasts year ill be happy. but within a week the scart socket had come loose and the connection was very unreliable. constantly having to pull out the player and wobble the scart until the picture comes back! Last night it broke completely. The scart socket goes insdie the player as you push the scart in. The player looks nice, and is nice and thin. The disk spinning can be a bit noisy which is annoying if you are trying to watch something quietly at night. Lastly, the power off button is only on the player so if you dont want to leave it on standby you have to switch it on and off on the actual player which is annoying. All in all, looking at the other reviews also, you cannot rely on this player lasting and it is not worth the trouble. May as well spend a bit more and hve something which will last.
