The winner plays it all !!!!!!! - 03 Mar 2008

After much thought and consideration I purchased this Blu Ray player from Sony. What a great choice I made especially as Toshiba have droped the rival HD DVD format. After setting the player up to my Sony Bravia HD TV & theatre system, I loaded it up with Casino Royale on Blu Ray. The Picture and sound blew my mind!!
Yes it's true to say start up is slow (about 1 min), but the wait is worth it.
I also downloaded the firmware from the sony web site and followed the instructions to update it. This was so easy and will make it compatable for future BD-R Discs.
Looks like I backed the winner and can't wait to see all future films released on blu Ray for a real high definition experience.
Pixmania are a rip off - 29 Feb 2008

I purchased this product on the Amazon Marketplace - it arrived - a French Model (I was told that this might be the case AFTER I ORDERED by an email from Pixmania). No adapter plug for the French mains plug, 3 French Blu-Ray DVD's and no Engligh instructioin manual. Steer clear of this company. They even have the cheek to say that I have to pay to get it returned to them so I can have my money back. Disgusting.
better of with a ps3 - 24 Feb 2008

I've seen this player in action and it performs well and is a reasonable price. Thing is though is that it is not completely updateable for future use and is very slow to boot up. You get a much better service buying a playstation 3 which loads my blu-rays in speedy time and the cell processer is capable of being fully futureproof. Im already enjoying profile 1.1 which is picture in picture playback and version 2.0 is out later this yr..easily updatable from the playstaion website. This cannot be updated on here so after a few months you have something that is out of date already. Seriously folks if you wanna get a blu ray player buy a ps3 instaed..completely futureproof, games machine, music player and yeah it upscales standard dvd's too like this does.
Just beware before you buy this that yes you are getting a good blu ray player but this will technology wise,be out of date by years end.

its a little longer in depth to most dvd players be aware of this for the extra few inches youll need...had it 4 weeks now...the first thing i done from the box was fill the free dvds cd-rom on line..4 weeks have passed but still no free dvds..spending £250.00 on a machine that pushed me a little to buy it 6 blu-ray films..maye one day??? yes its a littleslow to boot up..if brought over 100 blu-ray films the older ones work straight away but the newer one.s like resident evil..superbad..independnce day a while to load..but they all work..thiers a upload avalible on the sony website..this helped the picture esp on die hard..overall got the ps3 also but prefer to use this dvd player just seems to work a little better..running it through the sony 46" 1600to1 colour ratio tv..its good very good would recommend to you..yes theirs stories of no update system avalible by ethernet..but sony wohnt leave us with out future proof..would they..good looking player which has a great sound..thaks
I'd wait for a better version... - 18 Feb 2008

After agonising over the two formats, I went for this machine largely on the basis of compatibility with my Sony X-Series 1080p TV.
Most of the gripes on here are true - it does take ages to boot up, load films, etc but this isn't too much of a hassle when about to watch a 2 hour movie. It upscales 'old' DVDs well.
The major aggravation is the machine being supplied with an old firmware that cannot play Blu-Ray discs - you will need a firmware update to version 3.7. This is only available online and, as the BDP-S300 doesn't have an ethernet port, you must own a PC (you cannot update the firmware with a Mac - astonishingly). Sony's UK call centre would not mail me a disc, so I'm looking at a 30 mile trek to a Sony Centre to get one, so I can actually watch what I paid for. Thanks, Amazon. Thanks, Sony.
