Careful with 3rd party sellers - 31 Mar 2008

I ordered this item but Pixmania sent a foreign version. Whilst Amazon say they will guarantee the 3rd party sellers, they don't guarantee the postage if the item is wrong. Because the company is based in France, the cost for insured postage is half the cost of the item! therefore the guarantee is worthless and i have to keep a piece of rubbish.

I bought this player primarily for DivX compatibility, and was attracted to the upscaling feature. The Samsung appealed to me because of cosmetic and handset matching with my Samsung TV.

An earlier reviewer claims that DVD upscaling is a meaningless marketing con because HD TV's will fill the screen anyway using the upscaling digital filters they all have. This is a debate you will find in many AV forums, but my understanding is that the DVD player can do it better because it has access to frame-by-frame MPEG metadata giving motion vectors and suchlike, it can thus run an efficient algorithm to improve apparent resolution.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and to my taste the upscaling function is very effective; the picture does appear sharper, and with improved contrast and richer colours. I would not say that upscaling is a show-stopper or a reason of its own to junk your existing DVD player, but if buying your first DVD player, or looking for one with DivX compatibility, then upscaling is a feature it might be silly to pass up on.

Let me be the umpteenth to mention that you need an HDMI cable for upscaling to work, and it is worthing saying that unlike SCART, HDMI does not have a switching signal. This means that if connected by HDMI alone switching the DVD player on will not force the TV to DVD input, you have to select it manually. If you have both SCART and HDMI connections then switching the DVD player on will force to the TV to SCART input and you will not get the benefits of HDMI. Any of that make sense?

Others have mentioned that the blue ON light is brighter than a sane person would have made it, but I do not find that distracting.

It has played every disc I have thrown at it, including DVD +RW with several AVI/DivX films on, it displays a neat menu to choose the film you want. A cautionary note here, nobody should think that this or any other player can make a film condensed down to 700MB look as good as the 4+GB original, it's not going to happen.

Unlike some purchasers I have not found the remote to be a problem, and if you have a modern Samsung TV you can reduce your remote count.

The only downside to this player I know of is that it lacks a USB port, not a deal-breaker for me, but it might be for you.

Y'all have a nice day now.

For it's price, you can't complain one little bit - 11 Mar 2008

For £47 (cheapest you'll probably find it brand new) you're getting a pretty fantastic player. Visually it looks very nice, and rather 'sexy' if I don't say so myself. It's no wider or deeper than me previous Funai VHS/DVD combo machine but being half the height it's a real space saver.

The buttons on the front of the machine all respond straight away, although sometimes it can have a second or two delay but that's no big deal really. It does suffer the same delay with the remote sometimes, which itself can occasionally be sluggish. Again, that's no big deal unless you're in some kind of mega-rush.

In terms of it's range of abilities, it's top notch with the types of discs it can play. The only slight disadvantage is some DVD (R, +R, RW, +RW) and CD's of the same type may not play depending on the recording situations, but this is stated clearly in the instruction manual so it's not likely to be a surprise unless you don't read it. It is region 2 as stated, but it is hackable via the instructions noted on the first review of the items page and it does work.

The only things I can't comment on right now are the HDMI and up-scaling abilities as my tv is a little before that time so to speak, something that will hopefully change and I can check out soon enough.

If you're on a sub-50 quid budget, there's not much better on offer than this one.

Great player, excellent vfm but....... - 15 Feb 2008

The title says it all! Only thing that prevents 5 stars is that I can't get it to play copied DVD-R discs (Sony), which is a real pain!!
