Not multi-region! - 07 Jan 2008

Generally a good machine. However; "Amazon" advertise it as "multi-region". It should therefore arrive as instantly "multi-regional". Not only is that not the case but I have tried to convert it, using several procedures from the Internet. None work on my machine (purchased about Oct.07)
Excellent Multi-region DVD player! - 16 Jun 2007

Here we have the Samsung DVD-HD860. I can find only good things about this little gem, oh and yes physically a gem because it looks marvellous in the living room!
I currently have it connected to my CRT TV with a home cinema system also attached. Setting it up was very straight forward. Simply plug a scart lead into the TV and connect the other end into the DVD player. I also connected a digital cable from my AV receiver into the back of the DVD player. For 5.1 surround sound this took around 15 minutes and the instructions were very easy to follow.
The best part of this little player is that it's great for people who have HD televisions. It upscales an ordinary DVD to 1080i or 720p HD quality. Okay, this doesn't quite match true HD quality (like Blu-ray or HD DVD), but still, after seeing the difference with one film, you may find yourself going back and re-discovering your entire collection.
The player will also accept a large number of formats. For example, it will take MP3, JPEG and WMA formats which make it great for viewing homemade media. This player will even playback DivX coded formats. DivX is becoming more widely used and is a free codec for compressing video files (great for when you need to fit a video onto a CD that is slightly over 700MB)
The onscreen menu is very simple to use. Pop a disc into the player and it usually loads automatically (dead easy!). One minor gripe however, is that sometimes there's a slight delay in the player responding to commands made from the remote. Then again though, this could be due to low battery or the remote not being pointed correctly.
Just to echo what other reviewers have said in the past, getting multi-region going isn't hard either. Simply follow these instructions and you can convert your normal region 2 player in a multi-region one.
1. Turn on the device with no disc in the tray. The onscreen display will then read "No Disk".
2. Press the "Repeat" key on the Samsung remote control.
3. Then input the following code: "5 7 5 3 8" on the remote. Number then 2 appears onscreen for a short time.
4. Then press "9". Number 9 is then displayed onscreen for a short time.
5. You've now changed the region code on your player from 2 to 9 (all regions)
6. Finally, switch the player off (using the "On/off" button) and then back on again and you should be able to play discs from another region (US region 1 discs, etc).
Overall, this player is brilliant! Samsung are certainly making splendid AV products of late. I would say this has to be the classiest low cost DVD player I've seen in a while. Oh yeah and it even features in What Hi-Fi? Magazine May '07 as the one of the best value players around (check the "Buyers guide").

bought this player to go with my new samsung lcd tv and was immediatly impressed with the picture quality and the styling.then it started to go wrong.like a few reveiwers on this site my machine would switch itself onto stand by mode every now and then until it started happening more and more to the point that watching a disc was not possible.sadly by then its was after amazons 30 day return period was over so after speaking to samsung its now in the repair shop.ho-hum.
Excellent DVD player - shame about Amazon's appalling delivery practice - 09 Apr 2007

bought this to go with our new HD TV and have not been disappointed. DVDs have greater clarity and definition. Previous posts have commented upon the bright blue "on light" but you get used to it!!!! Remember - for you to see improved DVD quality you need to be viewing via a HD capable TV!!
Amazon Home Delivery Service decided to leave this item outside, behind a bin in near zero temperatures - so I can only suppose we are lucky that it was still there when we got home and it worked perfectly!!!!!!
Quality DVD Upscaling at a Reasonable Price - 12 Mar 2007

Received this player today and provided you sit a reasonable distance away from the TV the quality especially at 1080i is a big improvement over the component progressive output from my old player (also a Samsung). Can be made multiregion with ease by following the instructions on this site and is a good solution until the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle which is keeping prices high (especially outside of the US) sorts itself out. Not given 5 out of 5 as the upscaled output from my Telewest TV Drive box is better than the HD860 but for the price the HD860 does the job.
