5 Reviews for Samsung DVD-1080P7 - DVD Player With HDMI 1080P Upscaling

Great upscaling player - 23 Jan 2008

Aside from some sound technical issues discussed in other reviews, I must say that I am very pleased with the player which also doubles up as a CD player in my setup.

Firstly, the player is very very simple to use. Hardly any buttons or lights on the player (making it look sleek and sexy) with all remote fucntions easy to operate. It is in essence quite a simple, no-nonsense player, with hardly any added (usually pointles features)

Importantly, the things it is supposed to do it does well. The upscaling feature is brilliant. Image quality from standard (non-HD) DVD's is really quite stunning (i play films on a 44" rear projection TV using an Ixos HDMI cable). It really isn't far off HD quality, expecially if you don't press your face to the screen. If you're sat at a sensible distance away clarity is dazzling and there is a semi-HD quality to it. No doubt this is aided by a decent HDMI cable (cables being as important as the player..only as strong as weakest link etc). COlour, definition and general image quality are impressive. Remember to get the contrast down and brightness up to help reduce noise and improve image quality IMHO.

Thirdly, connectivity is good. There is HDMI, component, digital and coaxial audio out and scart. I run my 5.1 sound through a coaxial digital cable to my Yamaha amp. I've not encountered any real issues, although for Dolby Digital you need to change the audio out setting to Bitsream not PCM.

CD sound quality is also very decent, although the player will sometimes pause momentarilly (although this may have something to do with the Bitsream setting).

All in all a very decent player for a good price. Also extremely light and slim. As also mentioned, it can be easily hacked to play region 1 DVD's.

Recommended.

Samsung have big problems with this player!! - 11 Oct 2007

In essence this looks like a really good DVD player, and I must admit it looks great too. However, when I received the player and connected it through my Samsung AVR710 AV Amp - guess what they're not compatible with eachother!!!!! Firstly I thought it was a faulty DVD player so Amazon replaced it (thanks Amazon :-) ), but the second player was the same. The HDMI signal won't stay connected through my amp. So - if you are thinking of connecting this through Samsung Amp...dont buy it!! I've spoken to Samsung and they have hinted at interoperability problems but they wont commit to it.
I have also spoken to Richer Sounds (who I bought the amp from) and they have also had a lot of returns of this player due to similar issues, or it not playing all your DVD's.....Sorry to be so negative but BUYER BEWARE!!

Received yesterday - multi-region hack works - 14 Sep 2007

Received this player yesterday and hooked it up last night using an HDMI-HDMI cable. Played Region 2 and the picture quality on my Samsung 1080P LCD was superb. You could see the difference compared to my previous player, which was a good quality player. HDMI definitely an improvement on scart if you can use an HDMI cable.

Then tried the multi-region hack and it worked first time - playing Region 1 to the same quality. Improved quality even on older DVD's.

Hack for this player is the same as for the Samsung M105:

* Press the Repeat button on the remote (not the Repeat A-B)
* Press 5, 7, 5, 3 and 8 in order on the remote
* Number 02 will appear at the top left of the screen
* Quickly press 9 on the remote
* Quickly press the open button on the remote
* At least 15 seconds later power off the player, then power back on.

The player should now be multi-region.

If it isn't repeat the process as any delay pressing either 9 or open can lead to failure, as can not allowing 15 seconds before powering off.

If there's still a problem go to www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk and search for Samsung DVD-M105 to see if there's an alternative hack.

All in all, very happy with what I got for my money, although there are cheaper alternatives such as the Philips 5980.

1080p DVD player for CRT Projector - 13 Aug 2007

Having used Samsung DVD player, the 1080p is not much of an advantage over the 720p, mainly because you can only scale up so much regardless the higher resolution! The 1080p did stand out better with graphics and lettering while using the DVD menu etc. My DVD player did have a problem loading DVDs and I could not get it to play no matter what. Then the next day it would play fine with the same disc! I have posted my player back for an exchange and hope the problem will not happen again. For 1080p, it is a good value player. Quality could be better and some basic 720p players are better but prepare to pay more. This is ideal if wantng a 1080p upscaler until you buy your true HD player. You don't want to spend too much for a 1080p player, as they will all be outdated when the true HD DVD players come down in price (not too long now as blue ray is losing the HD market).

Not Bad But Could Be Better - 14 Jul 2007

I had been using my Xbox 360 as an upscaling DVD player using the VGA cable and I was really impressed with the picture quality but the noise from the 360 while playing movies was annoying especially during quieter scenes so I opted for an upscaling DVD player.

I got this Samsung because the company had a good reputation especially for HD hardware..

The DVD player itself is small in depth and about the same width as normal DVD players/Hi Fi separates.. its black which makes a change from silver which for a long time became the norm.. the display is simple and clear and green in colour although I would have preferred blue to match my other equipment.. the DVD drawer opens and closes quite smoothly but I have heard a small "clunk" every now and again when opening/closing it.

The menu system is pretty basic and sometimes slow.. here you have options to change audio/video settings, resolutions (manual/automatic) 576p/720p/1080i/1080p..

I hooked this player up to my Toshiba 32" HD LCD (720p) with a HDMI cable and inserted a DVD into the drive which gave me quite a shock, the picture was grainy with digital noise evident.. occasionally I experienced sound drop out although this doesn't happen a lot also I've had the DVD freeze for a moment while moving from one chapter to the next.. ok back to the picture quality... as I was saying the quality didn't look great, my 360 seemed to upscale much better than this.. I entered the menu to alter the picture settings (Brightness/Contrast/Colour Saturation) and here I discovered another problem.. each setting has 5 stages brightness level 1, level 2.......... level 5 etc, the problem is the difference between them is way too great, it can jump from contrast that looks too dull to a contrast that blinds you.. a word of warning, if you set up your equipment using a calibration DVD like the THX ones you get on some DVD's then you may as well forget it, altering the brightness and contrast on the DVD and the TV is just too frustrating, in the end I used my eyes to set this DVD player up and this resulted in a much better and cleaner picture.. inserting King Kong and allowing the player to upscale to 720p was quite pleasing to the eye but playing Blood Diamond for the most part looked quite bad, these DVD players do need good material to play, if the source material isn't very good then it cant work magic.. all in all, since setting up this player and doing it without the use of a calibration DVD I'm much happier with the picture quality although my 360 does beat it when it comes to upscaling movies.

The Avi playback was a totally different story, I downloaded some material and put if on a CD RW, put it in the player and waiting for it to load and was impressed with what I saw, the quality was much better than expected although no where near as good as a regular DVD but way better than I expected, it played thru the full movie without any lip sync problems and I was pleasantly surprised.. a big thumbs up to Samsung for the Avi playback!!!

I have given it 4 stars because the hassle setting it up because of the picture controls is just annoying, an option to bypass these settings would have helped a lot, I was tempted to give it 3 stars but that would have been a little harsh..

All in all its not bad but I'm beginning to wish I had given the Sony upscaling DVD player a try instead.
