It is fully multi-region! - 08 Mar 2007

I bought this DVD player a couple of months ago from pioneerav (an Amazon seller) and asked them, via the contact seller link, to make it multi-region for me. It arrived a couple of days later - fully multi-region with no limitations at all.

I used to live in the US so half my DVDs are Region 1 and half are Region 2 - it plays either perfectly and my xvid files written to DVD or CD as well. Once it is set to multi region, there is no need to change it again. So even if there is a 5 time change limit, it will not be a problem at all.

I have encountered the 5 change limit before with a Pioneer DVD-ROM in a PC but never with a standalone DVD player. I don't think asking Pioneer directly is likely to give you an accurate a workaround for region coding as they are forced to implement those restrictions.

I am not certain but I think making it multi-region involves sending certain IR commands that you can do with a programmable remote. Seeing as I don't own one of those the friendly folks at pioneerav did it for me.

All in all a great DVD player that does everything I need of it and will be even better when I get round to having a high definition TV. Don't let the above comment fool you into missing out on a great bit of equipment.

BEFORE WE START: BE WARNED - This DVD player is NOT, I repeat, NOT a genuine multi-region player: nor can it be reprogrammed with a simple software fix. It might be accurately described as being multi-region CAPABLE, but this only means that you can set the region via a set-up menu and special code. That's OK you might think, but I have also been warned by Pioneer's technical boffins that this can ONLY be done up to around 5 times - at which point the player will LOCK YOU OUT and you will be stuck with whichever region setting you last used. Apart from this massive problem - which is really down to Amazon's on-site description - the Pioneer appears to be fabulous in every other way. I haven't checked it out with an HDMI connection, but its pretty excellent even on standard RGB SCART. What a pity the thing is absolutely useless for playing my collection of region 1 discs!! It's fine if you only want to play R2/R0 PAL or NTSC though - I'm not sure how it compares with the Sony, but it's better than my Toshiba SD330-E (which was about the best of it's day).[...]
