Easy peasy.... - 22 Sep 2007

I bought this because I like the spec even though I don't have an HD TV. I wasn't sure if it would be ok. The reality is that my aerial was the wrong size as it needs a digital aerial input this the loss of one star (we don't go digital until 2012, Sky can't get a signal - too many trees nearby and there are no cable suppliers in this area...). That aside, the scart plugged in fine and there was no need to tune anything. I immediately followed the instructions of the previous reviewer on how to go region free and it has worked perfectly.

Not Good if you want to hear full 5.1 Channel Sound - 21 Sep 2007

I had this player for 3 days and then I sent it back.
It does everything as it says but the real problem aries when you want to listen to full 5.1 Channel sould in dolby Digital or DTS.

It can process PCM sounds easily without any issue, but if you want to use a coaxial cable to route the sound to your Audio receiver, and use HDMI cable to watch the video, the pictures starts to flicker.

What the player is not capable of is doing two handshakes at the same time for digital copyright protection.

There are some reviews which say that you can trick the player to send sound to both Audio receiver and TV, but in that case it only send PCM sound to receiver not the full 5.1 Channel sound.

To fully test this set, I recommend watch a dvd with DTS sound track, and you might find the same problem which I did.

Another thing, I also tried watching MPEG videos which I recorded using my Sony hard disc camcorder, they doesn't play very well either, throughout the clip there was some high pitch sound coming out of TV.

Amazing dvd player - 14 Sep 2007

It came two days ago.I have tested all the formats and can play everything.
No need for update on the firmware. It has, left right for audio, 4 types of connection for the picture,1xscart,1x tvout, 1x tv out(yellow),[ 1xPb blue 1xY (green) 1xPr(red) ],1xhdmi.I have connected to my home cinema with amazing results for dvd and Divx movies on sound. Plays also subtitles for the Divx movies.Just press the button on the remote.Easy to understand.
If you are looking for something more you can always see the manual from Philips, it solves a lot of questions.Because I don't have a lcd TV HD I have connected to a projector HD and results are AMAZING. I can't wait to buy my lcd now with upscaling to 1080i. Hope that is useful.

Worth the wait! - 03 Sep 2007

Propbably like most people I bought this type of DVD player as a cheap stop gap until the Blu-ray and HD-DVD war is concluded. I am a simple user and only wanted it for upscaling DVD's to my 1080p LCD TV. I was not concerned about DIVX, USB or MPEG4's and let me tell you I was not dissapointed!! My 3 year old was determined to watch Shrek first and I have to say once I got the settings right I was blown away by the picture and that really is all I care about. Once I got her out of the way I popped in Star Wars Episode 3 and the results were equally impressive. If this is the quality of upscaling I cannot wait to get a true HD player.

I do have two gripes and they are very annoying. The First it takes ages to start up from Standby. I have waited up to a minute for the tray to open. The second really does gripe with me. I have to set the player to upscale to 1080p almost everytime I use it. It seems to save the setting for about 12 hours in standby. After that it seems to revert back to the Auto setting, which doesn't seem to agree with my TV.

I give this 4 stars due to the great picture, which is after all why we by and upscaling DVD player. It lost a star due to the above annoying issues.

Excellent value for money. - 14 Aug 2007

First I'd like to thank Peter Alexander for the multiregion advice, and a very comprehensive review. However I think he's being a little too harsh on the remote. I suppose its "horses for courses" But for me the remote is just the right size, uncluttered in buttons, and is very responsive. At the top of the remote is the large buttoned menu cluster ( left, right, up, down, and a large OK button in the middle. Whilst the DVD is playing, these allow instant control over the speed, fast forward, fast rewind, the up and down buttons, instantly either slow the video forward, or backward. They are a joy to use, and allow complete control over DVD direction. Just below is the large Play/pause button, which again is very responsive. For me these are the important navigation buttons whilst playing a DVD and I think Philips have got this just right. The last DVD player I had was the Denon 1930 ( sold it to buy a HiDef player, but have decided to wait, hence the purchase of this Philips ) and the remote was truely aweful, woefully overclutted, far too big, and no design emphasis on navigation buttons.

I'm using this through a Toshiba WTL68 32" via HDMI input, and to my eyes its as good as the Denon, ie excellent picture and sound quality, but reassuringly without any lip-sync problems. It actually has a facillity to alter the lip-sync, should you find a DVD displaying this problem, but so far I haven't had to use it.

A big bonus is this will play MP3s on DVD's which the Denon couldn't.In fact it will play just about anything you throw at it. I had 4 year old CD-R with all sorts of files on it ( word, doc, Html, mp3, jpeg etc ) in very poor scratched condition. I was amazed when it read it, first showing what was in the root. I clicked on a folder and found some jpegs I'd forgotten about. When you highlight a jpeg, it displays a thunbnail image, pretty quickly. Then press OK and it displays it full screen, starting at the top and sweeping downwards ( takes about 3-4 secs to load full picture depending on size of file ). But the wait is worth it ! Here the HDMI connection excells. The images are pin sharp, with beautiful colours and contrast. This has changed the way I view my digital pictures. They look truely amazing on a large screen as compared to a small computer monitor.

I found this unit to run cool, and most importantly, very very quietly.

To summarise, I think this player gives an excellent picture and sound using an HDMI connection to a LCD/plasma TV, and goes a long way towards multimedia playing capabilities. I have no problems whatsoever with the remote which is sturdy, very responsive and in my opinion well designed.

Excellent value for money
