Great for its price. - 29 Mar 2008

I love this dvd player.
I must admit i only use it to watch standard dvd's, i dont use it for the usb port and i dont have a hd or lcd tv so i dont use the hdmi socket, i dont watch divx on it.
But for it's price it is an amazing piece of technogoly, it plays any type of dvd without any problems, its quiet and it looks stunning.
The only problem i have with it is even though the remote is very stylish it doesnt respond very well. I find that most of the time it wont work the fist time you press a button, and if it doesnt work the first time then it wont work the second time which is wierd, so it only works the first or third time you use it lol
Mabye it doesnt like even numbers?
Also the display screen is a bit confusing, once you have watched an hour of film you cant tell what chapter you are on on how long the film has been going as all the numbers are squashed together, which is confusing.
But out of 10 i would give it an 8, as it is very good quality and very stylish for its price.
they should have included a cable - 23 Mar 2008

I was a bit annoyed when I opened the box to find this came with NO cables to connect it to anything. Not even a scart cable let alone an HDMI. When I finally got it running it proved itself to be a good piece of machinery. The upscaling works really well. The difference between your standard DVD and blue becomes minimal and highly insignificant. It really has made me watch my new LCD tv which up to now I have found to be unpleasing (admit you've been missing your CRT). Plays DivX without any problem too, which is a great feature. Good value for money even though you will have to pay a few quid extra to get an HDMI cable.
Good functionality, otherwise below average - 18 Mar 2008

Nice looking player, the fact that it's so slim was a big selling point for me. DivX and the USB connectivity are other huge plus points.
However, the remote was temperamental at best, I tried new batteries but it was no better. I was prepared to consider it a one off (and a small price to pay) then I focussed on other aspects of the players performance. Maybe I've been spoilt, but the picture is decidedly blurry. Much worse than my existing Panasonic player that is beginning to sound like a bag of spanners. Also, DivX files on either DVD or through USB connection is jerky, like its dropping frames. Again, if played through the Panasonic or via my laptop, the picture is smooth and clear.
I know the player is only £40, and for that it is a bargain. Maybe mine was a one off, I hope so but I'd rather put up with my noisy Panasonic than watch this one.
Great, but doesn't do WMV - 14 Mar 2008

Very happy with it. One niggle: it doesn't play Windows Media Video -- audio, yes, but not video.
Good enough to buy 2 but with a few niggles - 12 Mar 2008

Plus points:
- multi-region (see previous reviews how to), including RCE protected discs
- plays avi from disc, usb and hard drive(fat32 formatted - doesn't like ntfs). Upper limit seems to be 720 pixels wide, which is DVD resolution. Wouldn't play a couple of movies I have at 800 and 768 wide. No big deal.
- excellent upscaling
- has dolby digital down-mix (excellent for playing avi with only AC3 soundtrack for those without DD sound system)
- plays all disc types (DVD+R/W DVD-R/W)
Downsides:
- lousy picture from SCART (may be my cable but my tivo was fine with it)
- occasional sound drop outs (for about 1 sec) from digital output - fine with analogue
- as mentioned in previous review stretches 4:3 films to 16:9. May be a problem for those using HDMI hookup only on certain TVs. My second TV has a DVI input and it is ok on this. I also have unit connected via component as well as HDMI to lounge TV which lets me watch in correct aspect ratio, but loses upscaling.
Overall though an excellent unit and I have bought a second for use in the bedroom.
