i bought this dvd player in the summer and was quite unsure of it.however it has been by far the best 1st time purchase ive made in a dvd player.it plays everything from region 2 to region 0 providing u know the way to setup the multi region facility, which is so easy to do and can be found on most reviews on amazon or can be found on the internet elsewhere.if your looking for a new dvd player then invest in this, u will not be disappointed!!!five star purchase product!!!buy it now!!!

Bought the DVP-520, super-fast delivery - next day. Great product, plays everything I've tried. One review said that on the zoom function the white x2 icon stays in the middle of the screen - he must have had a faulty player, as mine disappears after about 5 seconds and the feature works perfectly. I only gave it 4/5 though as I agree with a previous review that the sound, although of a good standard - is not as good as my previous player (which broke!) through my stereo. But for the price - you can't grumble and it's an excellent - super slim, good looking machine. Would definetly recommend it.

I am very pleased with the Philips DVP 520 that I've recently purchased. Delivery time was prompt - which is typical of Amazons excellent service.

A major factor for me choosing this particular player is that it's Multi-region capable. Although it doesn't play US region 1 DVDs straight out of the box for instance, by following a few simple steps this is easily overcome. To convert just do the following:

1) Press the 'System Menu' button on your remote control

2) Using your remote control, highlight the 'Preferences' menu

3) Press the '1' button on your remote control

4) Press the '3' button on your remote control

5) Press the '5' button on your remote control

6) Press the '5' button on your remote control

7) Press the '6' button on your remote control

8) Press the '6' button on your remote control

9) You should now be in the hidden region selection menu were you can change the region to '1' for region 1, '2' for region 2, and so on, or '0' for multi-region playback

10) Press the 'OK' button on your remote control

At the time of writing, Amazon also had on offer the Sony DVP-NS355 which, similar to the Philips, offers very good build quality, crisp clear pictures and is easy to use. At £49.99 it was also a bargain. I know someone with this unit and it does everything it says on the tin, although it won't play Multi-region DVDs without spending extra money on a remote control that is capable of allowing it to do so. This makes the Philips unit perfect if this is important requirement.

Summing up, the Philips DVP 520 is Multi-region capable which is easy to set-up and operate, compact and good looking. It's also very quiet while playing and offers superb sound and picture quality considering it's aimed at the budget end of the market.

The only slight criticism I have, which has been mentioned in a previous review, is the lack of an Eject button on the remote. But this is a very minor point in an otherwise excellent player which I can thoroughly recommend.

Anyone looking for a top-notch and cost effective DVD player. Look no further, you've found it!!: Its the PHILIPS DVP 520 Multi Region capable DVD Player.

It plays EVERY single disc under the sun - straight out of the box too , theres not even any need to use the hack code. I recently bought "and returned" the Sony DVP-NS355 Multi-region DVD Player because while it was a nice little player, it does not play Region 1 DVDs - unless you'd like to fork out more cash to buy a remote to hack it - which i did not.

Anyway - It really does go to show you get what you pay for and you get a GREAT DEAL with this player.

Superb player. Plugged it in via SCART, changed the region to zero (multi-region) using the method described in a previous review and away I went. Very slimline and small. Not noisy at all. Definitely worth the money. I have no hesitation in recommending this player.
