5 Reviews for Kiss DP-500 DivX DVD Player
Excellent machine. Buy now - 07 Feb 2004

First the bad points. The manual could be more helpful. Many of the instruction are misleading, especialy the one about your computers IP address, a novice would struggle. The Toshiba (?) drive is noisy and flimsy. As a PC builder I know that there are many drives of much better quality at the same price.
Despite this the machine looks terrific. When I first connected it most of the LAN options did not work too well. However, as soon as I had updated the firmware the machine was transformed. It will play anything I throw at it, and play it well. Although me PC is 20 metres away there is no lag, no sync problems and the web radio works very well. Unlike other reviewers I do not notice any delay with the remote.
It's great to sit in your armchair and pick from a list of all my divx movies, mp3s and pictures sitting up there on my hard drive. My 80Gb storage disc is going to need upgrading soon.
Despite my minor critisisms I think the machine rates full marks +. Due to the upgrade path provided by KISS it will only improve. Buy one now.
Kiss DP-500 Div X DVD Player - 24 Jan 2004

I shall keep this short and sweet. This unit is worth every penny, in terms of its overall functionality. What more could you ask for ?, a DVD player for all your normal DVD's and a full blown DIV X, MP3, WMA and picture player which allows full connectivity to the Internet & your home network.
The only recommendation to make here is that as soon as you receive this unit, download all the latest drivers / updates from the Kiss website. Once loaded on to the DVD player and your PC it all works like a dream.
Final note, I liked it that much, I ordered another unit a few days later ! superb !
It isn't as good as it seems!, It is good - 13 Jan 2004

Ok first things first, the person who wrote the previous review did not realise that the Kiss 500 Player (500 model) does not have a hard drive. So you cannot store your files onto it. But the 508 model does have a hard drive.
I have the 500 model and I find its great, I use it with my 54Mbit wireless network and it works great. Its is amasing. I admit at first there were a few bugs in the software, but after a few updates the latest version of the software is great. I cannot get it too crash. And the internet radio is amasingly good, but I don't use it a lot.
Overall this drive is amasing it plays everything I have.
Great player, but will become greater... - 10 Jan 2004

Always a bit of a technophile, the instant I heard about Kiss's range of dvd/divx players i decided to keep an eye on them... When the DP-500 model arrived, i wanted one, and i got one.
Ok, so it's got its faults, but it's one of a kind - the ability to play dvd's and divx video from a cd/dvd is a great thing, but the ethernet link is wonderous - no more having to stop playing games so you can watch a downloaded tv episode, just push a couple of buttons and it's there on your screen and with perfect colours (graphics cards just can't produce decent colour balance even when using s-video).
Someone mentioned disliking the remote - I love it - ever noticed that the higher spec of a product, the more basic the remote looks?
Only problems i've noticed so far is to do with the ergonomics of the ethernet menu (if you play an mp3, then want to play a video or look at some pictures, you have to stop, then go into the menu - a "back" feature would have been useful) and certain divx movies with vbr encoded audio un-syncing...
Basically, if you need the ability to play files from your pc and you don't want to have to turn off a game and leave the pc alone whilst doing it, then this is for you. If you want a basic dvd player, then this ain't for you.
As for multiregion hack, it's dead easy - burn a file to a cd, pop it in, wait, reset the player (don't upgrade to 2.8 firmware first though!)
This player is in it's early stages, so expect a few glitches and a few restarts, but Kiss at least keep updating and fixing things!
Fantastic box of tricks! - 22 Dec 2003

I was looking for a simple piece of hardware to play all my Divx and Xvid files without the hassle of using the computer and I found it in this. First recommended to me by a friend who also found it easy and good value. There have been the odd bugs with the firmware but you simply download updates from the manufacturers site.
The webradio function is also very useful and more companies are now making software for it so you can now have weather imaging on your tv for your area. Very recommended.
