I bought this player a year ago for just over £100, including a wireless card.

My driver for buying this player was that my previous player, a Yamada DVX-6600, had given up the ghost, and that I wanted a networked player, preferably wireless, for playing the large collection of media on my PC.

Originally, this player was intolerably buggy, and I mean unbearable! Virtually every time I tried to play a DivX or MPEG film, either from disk or over the network, the player would hang after a few minutes. To make matters worse, the only way to clear the problem was to physically pull the plug out! Doing this 10 times during a film caused me to want to return the player after a day or two!

Fortunately Kiss's technical support was fairly helpful, and after applying a firmware upgrade the player performs much better. I also found the 802.11b wireless card (the maximum the player supports) much too slow for streaming decent-quality video. So I replaced the wireless card with a cheap 802.11g wireless bridge which plugs into the ethernet port on the player. Not only is the bridge 5 times faster, but I can also move it away from the back of the television, which is a notoriously bad spot for wireless interference.

Since then the wireless streaming works fairly well, with the odd bearable hiccup. The DivX player functionality is also rather good, with nice features like being able to jump to a certain point in a film without the need to fast forward or rewind.

As a DVD player, I'm very pleased with this unit. The sound quality through my home cinema system is excellent through the optical out, and the video quality is very respectable.

For playing MP3s, I'm not as impressed. Wirelessly they stream with very few problems, however the interface is very clunky. Don't imagine an easy iTunes type interface where you can sort by album, artist, etc. All you can do is view the physical files in the folders in which they reside. The view when playing an MP3 is also very ugle and uninformative.

There are some nice alternative software products out there that allow you to expand the features of the player (www.ezlinkng.com is a good one) but in my opinion the original web-radio is very poorly implemented, and even on my 2Mbps broadband connection suffers from stuttering. You can add in RSS news feeds, but again, they are very basic and clunky to navigate.

In my view, if you want a networked DVD player then this is a solid, reliable unit for a respectable price. If you're after a wireless player, then this requires a bit more tinkering, but works to a reasonable level when things are set up right. However, if your focus is more on MP3s, I'd probably advise you to go for something designed more for that purpose. This player feels like it was designed for films, with some other bits and pieces added in to try to give it an edge above the competition.

Very Very Buggy Machine!!! - 17 Jan 2005

I bought this machine for 2 reasons. Firstly because it can play divx and xvid movies ( of which i have hundreds ). And secondly because it can play movies and other media directly from your computer using the built in ethernet port in the player. ( I have a 250gb hard disk full of films, and this would make it perfect to watch the movies without having to burn them onto cd)

This would make the Kiss DP 1500 the perfect dvd player in my eyes, or so I thought!

The problems occured when trying to configure the ip address of the dvd player so that it can play the media directly from the computer. It worked once, and then i decided to change the ip address of the player because i needed to change my computers ip address.
This was a big big mistake, as now the dvd player cannot connect to the computer no matter what i set the ip configuration to be! I tried resetting the machine, reinstalling the firmware, everything, and still it doesn't work. I have been fighting with it for weeks now, and am tempted to throw the machine out of the window!

So that's the main bug. However, there are several other annoying problems with the machine:

Sometimes you are watching a movie and the screen freezes and the machine becomes completely unresponsive. Pressing any button on the remote control or the player itsself has absolutely no effect! The only option is to pull the power cord out of the back and plug it in again!!

The subtitles for the divx movies are very small and characters for foreign languages are not displayed at all, meaning that my czech girlfriend has not got a clue what the subtitles are saying!

Pressing a particular button on the remote control is understood incorrectly by the machine (For example, when pressing the key "5" in the remote, the machine understands it as "8" ).

On the plus side, it does play divx movies, and the picture quality is really pretty good. Though it cannot handle high action scenes too well, and will sometimes freeze if there is too much action on the screen.

Overall, I'm very very disappointed with this machine, and have found owning it a very frustrating experience! Perhaps when a new version of the firmware for this machine is released, these problems will be fixed. But, after looking at some forums for owners of these machines (http://www.mpeg-playcenter.com), i would not get my hopes up too high.
If you want a dvd player that can play divx movies, i recommend getting one from a more established brand, as it is more likely they will not have the cheek to release a player that is so full of bugs!
