This system looks fantastic and sounds gigantic. The subwoofer will make your liver quake.
But it only worked properly for a few days. The wireless rear speakers won't activate any more in normal use; they only come on for the first 5 seconds after power-up, until the DVD player goes into standby. Thereafter the rear receiver simply won't activate any more.
I've had the DVD and wireless rear receiver replaced already. So now I'm going to have to go through the rigamarole of returning the whole, extremely heavy package back to the retailer (not Amazon, by the way!) for yet-another-attempt at getting a working unit.
It's hard to believe that Philips' QA would approve such a highly strung product. Avoid.

I purchased this unit on its first week of release in 2006. It looks amazing as a vertical unit, no buttons, just classy black glass panel with blue backlit touch sensitive controls and displays.
The picture and sound quality match the looks. The upscaling is quite superb, try Monsters' Inc. and see detail in the concrete walls which you've never seen before, clarity in the materials and hair that shouldn't be visible without true HD. I watch my DVD's on a Philips 37PF9731D LCD TV upscaled to 1080i (although the TV then performs even more upscaling to 1080p) and provides the quality of picture almost up to the same standard as Blu-ray on my PS3.
The sound is also excellent with astounding spatial effect and tremendous bass. The speakers match the good looks of the main unit and look great around the room. The rear speakers are connected to the main unit via a wireless controller which reduces the need for more cables.
Sounds fantastic, it is ..... BUT there is one major frustration I've had since the beginning. The remote control is very unresponsive and you can push the source button to change from DVD to external source and nothing happens, push it again and it skips multiple sources and the display on the remote never matches with the source you have selected which makes it almost impossible to work out where you are.
The only other minor gripe is the lack of any optical connections for other sound sources.
Note that these are the only frustrations on a system which performs brilliantly and is in essence a beautifully crafted piece of entertainment equipment.
