Great Sound.......BUT - 22 Feb 2008

Had read a lot of reviews on this system over the past 6 or 7 months and decided that I should go down this rout as my screen is a Philips so synching should be easy, when using a scart that was the case and the TV would switch source automatically, now that i have a (long) HDMI it has to be switched manualy, though it's worth it for the upscaling (720p seems best). No doubt that sound is fantastic, though the sub can be a little heavy at times and it doesn't seem to be a powerful as my older Yamaha reciever. Be wary of the size, the unit has had to be sited quit a ways from the screen as it is very tall and won't fit onto my Alphason stand, that now means a big black cable to the junction box and two big black cables leading to the sub running across the living room, the BIGGEST dissapointment is the inabilty to accept 5.1 or 6.1 from an external source, meaing all the lovely stuff broadcast in HD is just listened to via the TV, should have done more homework on it.

Great looking and superb sound from CD and cinema.Great seperation and depth.
Only real problem is the slowness of changing sources.Drive you nuts.
Also I cannot play back some of my sources i.e radio from my freeview tuner which worked fine on my previous JVC sytem.
Absolutley woth buying.
Dont listen to the recent reviews its a great system!! - 22 Jan 2008

Have had this system for a week now. The sound quality is amazing and the DVD does a great job of upscaling to 1080i!
The sub is too strong at times, really it is like nothing you would ever heard of before!
I have read a lot of bad reviews about this product but I think that the complexity of it is somewhat too high for some people, which is maybe why they are encountering problems. Philips do not released products as bad as some people say this one is!
It is very difficult to put together so if you're not very knowledgeable about these types of things get someone to help or get a professional in.
The rear speakers work fine and do a great job in presenting them sounds that you would have probably never heard without a system like this one.
There is only one real problem I have with this system and that is that the DVD system itself is very slow to operate at times and changing source can take some time.
Come on Philips bring out a hardware update!!!!
To summarize you can't expect perfection for a surround sound system that comes in at £500 but this is the closest you can get to it for this type of money!
Shoddy Hardware from Philips - 19 Jan 2008

This system looks fantastic and sounds gigantic. The subwoofer will make your liver quake.
But it only worked properly for a few days. The wireless rear speakers won't activate any more in normal use; they only come on for the first 5 seconds after power-up, until the DVD player goes into standby. Thereafter the rear receiver simply won't activate any more.
I've had the DVD and wireless rear receiver replaced already. So now I'm going to have to go through the rigamarole of returning the whole, extremely heavy package back to the retailer (not Amazon, by the way!) for yet-another-attempt at getting a working unit.
It's hard to believe that Philips' QA would approve such a highly strung product. Avoid.
I junked this system - 17 Jan 2008

I bought this system having read some of the above reviews set it up and prepared to be amazed. well I wasn't. It took me two days of switching on and off the frontsub and rear reciever before I finally got a signal. Great I thought until the left rear speaker began to cut out at random. Switching the rear receiver off and on cures this for a very short time then off it goes again.
Connecting a sony blu-ray player via the co-axial lead, (no hdmi in) resulted in a huge lip synch problem, the sound being delayed by a a large amount. The lip synch adjustment on the system only works in the opposite direction. To say I was disapointed is putting it mildly.
I put this lot pack in its box, put it away and ordered a sony system instead which is fully compatible with my blu ray and sony tv, has a better spec and costs a lot less.
