What a simple and outstanding machine - 01 Mar 2008

Having never had a home cinema system before, I was a bit daunted by the idea. Was recommended this unit and it has one of the best sounds I have heard from a TV home cinema system. Very easy to set up and use, the upscale of normal (non HD) disks is really impressive. All in all if you want supberb sound very few wires and a machine that is easy to use look nno further

Same as the other 1 star reviews, I bought this machine and was initially very impressed. Just under a year on and it's nothing more than an expensive set of speakers, when they work!! The NO DISC error when inserting a DVD has quickly worsted and now it will not play ANYTHING including the CD cleaner recommended by Philips!! NO NOT BUY!!

Don't know what this product is like because Amazon insist on using City Link who ALWAYS lie and never deliver as and when they are supposed to. Shame really because I sometimes only use Amazon for its express delivery option and now I know better I will rarely come here.

Totally agree with the other 1 star review - the machine constantly says NO DISC. Carried out all instructions provided by Philips to rectify this (Firmware Upgrade from there website)and this fixed the problem ONCE!!! Still says NO DISC and Philips now aren't interested. Don't want a replacement - I just want to watch a DVD!!

I was banned from buying a full 5.1 system by my wife as she didnt want wires and speakers all over the place so started looking for a 2.1 system and this philips was what i settled on.
I have been totally blown away by the performance, the system is in effect a full 5.1 system using only 3 speakers. The satelite speakers are very sexy looking with a gloss black finish which nicely matches my philips lcd with its black glass surround. Each speaker has 3 small drivers which are angled to bounce sound around the room and try to replicate a surround effect. It does a pretty good job of this, while watching 'We were soldiers' the sounds from helicopters move all over the room very nicely.
The subwoofer is seriously powerful, sometimes too powerful. If you live in close proximity to your neighbours, expect to annoy them.
The main unit itself looks very nice in understated black and silver and the slot in DVD drive is cool. The DVD plays DIVX movies fine and has a useful lip sync feature if voices dont quite match the video. I connected mine upto my telly with an hdmi lead and the player upscales DVDs to 1080i and they look ace. The system also has a coaxial digital input giving the option to connect an Xbox360/PS3 to it in 5.1 sound (you will need an Optical to Coax converter though £10)
You can buy these for about £200 now which is a serious bargain.

Con's
Fixed speakers cables to satelites(good cable length though), no wall mount option for satelites.
