Pretty good for the money - 30 Dec 2006

I agonised long and hard before ordering this Sharp, having never had Sharp products before, but the price saving over the equivalent Sony or Panasonic, plus the image quality compared to other models, swung it for me.

And I'm pretty pleased with it. It's very solidly put together. The image quality is good, but as others have commented, it does need some setting up to get the best out of it, as there are myriad options and the default settings are fairly mediocre. The sound, however, is pretty reasonable out-of-the-box. It has both analogue and digital tuners, and the digital tuner gives good quality pictures (compared to a Sony HDD recorder through the HDMI input, the Sharp picture wins out). However, there is a very slight lag between the video and audio sometimes which I find a bit disconcerting; this can't be adjusted.

The EPG is "average" - ie compares OK with similar Panasonic products but nowhere near as good as some (such as found in Sony DVD/HDD recorders, or for that matter, my old LG LCD screen). I have found the TV has locked up once or twice when viewing the EPG; it would be nice to think this would be fixed in a future software update, but I fear not. The screen does a great job of working out the right aspect ratio to display for a variety of different inputs, and doesn't seem to get it wrong and stretch or squash the picture inappropriately - one of my usual bugbears.

On the whole, this is a great TV for the money, giving big-brand quality for far less outlay. The weakest point is probably the software, but for me the slight niggles here are outweighed by the build quality, picture quality and sound.

Top quality mid-range LCD - 30 Nov 2006

Sharp pretty much invented the LCD TV and this is a very accomplished 32" set with digital TV and 2x HDMI and at this price is excellent value for money compared to more expensive Sony sets. It is very good looking and I like the look of the speaker strip below the panel itself. It has all the usual bells and whistles in terms of digital signal processing - but frankly you are going to want to switch most of them off when you get around to setting up. The panel is good quality with high contrast and fast response time - but by no means a market leader at this point, say compared to a Samsung. There is good connectivity with HDMI as well as all the other connection options. Others have reported that this set is not good for computer use as the VGA input is limited in resolution - not a problem for me. I have been using HDMI from an upscaling DVD and the picture is fantastic.
You must set aside at least an hour or so to set this up properly otherwise you will end up disappointed and with a picture that reminds you of the back of a Dixons shop. I would recommend that you turn off all the fancy stuff with the exception of OPC - off with noise reduction etc. off with QuickShoot, make sure you are configured for interlace rather than progressive (at least for video use). Turn down the backlight and colour and tint and brightness - keep reasonable contrast. Obviously it's all subjective, but I am very pleased with the picture quality - especially from the DVD source where it's almost as good as a true HD source. A nice feature is that you can set video config for each video source.
The audio quality I feel is a strong point of this set and is much better than the equivalent Sony's which I find struggle particularly with DVDs to create much presence - they also tend to lose voices. The Sharp sound is good and fully configurable. I just use the built-in - so cant comment on Dolby, DTS etc.
The program guide on the DTV is not great and for the firmware version current it has a bug which causes the TV to hang (according to other forums). However, the set automatically downloaded a new firmware version and I have had no problems. All in all I found setup reasonably straightforward though it is not going to be easy for a genuine technophobe.
As always, the digital tuner has that 'bolted on afterwards' feel - not physically of course but in terms of the user interface. It looks different and has its own setup off a different menu. But once it's up and running it has worked fine - though unlike some sets and boxes it uses the concept of "carriers" and not just "channels". So it tells you that you are seeing "Crystal Palace Carrier A" - technically interesting (a bit) but irrelevant to enjoying the TV.
All in all I am very happy with it. I was ready for the picture off standard TV signals to be a little worse than my old Sony CRT. Once setup properly it is better and for DVD very considerably better. Recommended.
