Smart looking TV but sadly flawed. - 13 Mar 2006

This is the second of these TVs I have tried. The first one leaked a 5" horizontal line of white light from the top left hand edge of the screen, most notable when watching DVDs or changing channels. Amazon kindly swapped out the unit.

Sadly the replacement TV suffered from a tilted/distorted screen. For instance a ticker tape such as those used to scroll headlines on news programs such as BBC News 24 would dive towards the bottom left hand side of the screen.

As for other more general comments about this model of TV; sound quality was OK through the built in speakers but the lack of audio outs made hooking the TV up to my HI-FI difficult requiring a SCART converter dongle. The resultant sound quality through the HI-FI was poor in comparison to my previous PHILIPS 4:3 TV which did have audio outs. The only other complaint I have is about the remote control, I guess the design is prevalent across much of their range, but I find it clumsy to use. It is too large even for my large hands, and the channel select buttons too far from the up/down buttons. Also aspect ratio switching should be much easier as it is one of the most common tasks you need to do, especially if you still watch terrestrial analogue broadcasts which, whilst predominantly 14:9, still include much 4:3 and the odd 16:9. And here is a general irritation I have with wide screen signalling; why does the WSS signal, when present, only signal 16:9 or not 16:9? Could it not signal 16:9, 14:9 and 4:3? If it did, the need to constantly change the aspect ratio manually would not be necessary, but I must stress this is not necessarily a criticism of the JVC just a general broadcast complaint.

Other than the tilt I cant complain about the picture quality as it looked no better or worse than the old TV and I suppose if it wasnt for the tilt I would probably have persevered with it. Sadly Amazon would not swap out twice so it had to be returned and refunded.

This is such a shame as it is an attractive looking TV and one of the few remaining TVs still produced in black which I find to be imminently smarter than all this silver that is about these days.
